Discrimination with ââ¬ÅA House on Mango Streetââ¬Â Essay
In the society of today, discrimination and other similar ideas are not suppressed so that they are free to roam our cities, states, countries, and finally the whole world. Still, different sides of the world have different types of discriminations. There are some about animals, race, etc. But the worst possible is discrimination against the opposite sex; cause then those people would be against about 50 percent of the worldââ¬â¢s population of humans. So, those who oppose this would try to show the world that the idea of sexism is wrong, and Sandra Cisneros is one of then. She indirectly discusses it in a book, ââ¬Å"House on Mango Street.â⬠This book, ââ¬Å"The House on Mango Streetâ⬠by Sandra Cisneros, showed feminism and machismo in the Latino culture. For example, I quote, ââ¬Å"I thought I would because he was so old and just as I was about to put my lips on his cheek, he grabs my face with both hands and kisses me hard on the mouth and doesnââ¬â¢t let go.â⬠(p.55) In this quote, the man, who represents the machismo side, tries to take control of Esperanza, which is in the feminism side. This shows an example for power between each other and the thought that the sexes are unequal, unbalanced, and that the male side has more power. For, is the man in the story didnââ¬â¢t think that he could kiss Esperanza and get away with it because he has the right to do so, then he wouldnââ¬â¢t have done so. Just because the society that Esperanza lives in believe that women have no right in the governments or any other part of the society than to care for the family that she lives in and nothing else. So, taking the machismoââ¬â¢s side, first of all I think that it is wrong and that all people are on the same level of equality, its just that some prove themselves more valuable to others so that they have more power in the real world but no person has power over another person. Womenââ¬â¢s rights is another important idea of discriminations. An example from this book would be, ââ¬Å"Then Rafaela, who is still young but getting old from leaning out the window so much, gets locked indoor because her husband is afraid Rafaela will run away since she is too beautiful to look at.â⬠(p.79) In this part of the story, the one on the feminism side is being locked up and prevented from doing what she wants to do. In my point of view, plus my previous experiences, I know that no one likes to be locked up and not enjoyà the joy while is possible to do so. Also, it affects how the affected person would respond to others when they are free because they would have never even touched the real world. It would have both physical and mental effects. In addition to that, the women shouldnââ¬â¢t be locked up and more they are limited, the more they would be afraid of the world outside and surrounding them. But, even though most women who are locked up in their own house would be afraid of the world outside, in the very inside, there would be a place where they are longing to transform the musty air they breath to fresh. The dull and bitter papaya and coconut juice would then change into sugar and bubbly drinks. All these would be incomplete without some equality in this society and world. There are places for everyone in this world, but sometimes there are a few people who will never know where they fit. These people are ignored and need places to belong to. For example, Esperanza needs a home of her own because the house she is living in now brings her and her family shame. In the hierarchy of needs, love and caring is one of the parts in it and when the hierarchy is incomplete, there would be problems and disorders. These women who are fighting hard not only for freedom, but also their lives, and they are least likely to succeed when the opposite sex are constantly harassing them and donââ¬â¢t make them feel that they belong. Some strong willed ones would find a way to escape their treacherous would, but that does not work for every abused woman. As a result, the men would give the women so hard of a time to live their lives that they would even fear to even think about escaping their present life. They are why equality must be achieved throughout the world. All that is done and said, there is only one thing left to do. Words may change peopleââ¬â¢s thoughts and ideas, but words without action is just like living on a deserted island, no point in doing so. That is why we must bring words and actions together to fight discrimination back to where it came from. Words alone would only give a new idea and would not change the world. Action alone would result in only hurting people. Still, words alone, like Martin Luther King or Caesar Chavez, would succeed, but it would take more time and the ââ¬Å"inactiveâ⬠people would suffer before the world changes. All that is asked is that ideas of how discriminations should be public so that everyone would know how the majority of the population feels and some or even all would change their ideas about how to treat one another and finally achieve equality. It is all about how in which perspective the ideas are seen. It would take a long and grueling process, but the rewards are always better than what is lost.

Forgive My Guilt
In this poem, the Ol' Higue tells of her frustration with her lifestyle. She does not like the fact that she sometimes has to parade around, in the form of a fireball, without her skin at night. She explains that she has to do this in order to scare people, as well as to acquire baby blood. She explains that she would rather acquire this blood via cooked food, like every-one else. Her worst complaint is the pain of salt, as well as having to count rice grains. She exhibits some regret for her lifestyle but implies that she cannot resist a baby's smell, as well as it's pure blood. The ââ¬Ënewness' of the baby tempts the Ol' Higue, and she cannot resist because she is an old woman who fears death, which can only be avoided by consuming the baby's blood. She affirms her usefulness in the scheme of things, however, by claiming that she provides mothers with a name for their fears (this being the death of a child), as well as some-one to blame when the evil that they wish for their chil d, in moments of tired frustration, is realized. She implies that she will never die, so long as women keep having babies.Poems: ââ¬ËOlââ¬â¢ Higueââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËLe Loupgarouââ¬â¢ The what ââ¬â Content: Theme ââ¬â The supernatural, stories used to explain unknown or phenomena. The experience of growing up on the isolated volcanic island, an ex-British colony, has had a strong influence on Walcott's life and work. Both his grandmothers were said to have been the descendants of slaves. His father, a Bohemian watercolourist, died when Derek and his twin brother, Roderick, were only a few years old. His mother ran the town's Methodist school. After studying at St.à Mary's College in his native island and at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, Walcott moved in 1953 to Trinidad, where he has worked as theatre and art critic. Bipolar Disorder Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Bipolar Disorder - Assignment Example 35). Most individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder experience episodes of mania (or, in other words, elevated moods) and depression during their whole lives. When people experience mixed episodes, it means they are depressed and manic at once. While having mixed episodes, individuals may feel wound up, as well as they may have racing thoughts and find it difficult to stay still, as typically found in mania. At the same time, these people feel hopeless and have suicidal thoughts, as in depression (Basco, 2005, p. viii). Clinical features of bipolar disorder are associated with the following symptoms of mania: reduced need for sleep, euphoria, as well as grandiosity. Additionally, individualsââ¬â¢ condition is characterized by mood instability, irritability, plus reactivity. The behavior may be aggressive and oppositional with serious temper tantrums (Cutler & Marcus, 2010, p. 481). Children and adolescents diagnosed with bipolar disorder demonstrate manic behavior, for example, they may defy a teacher and make attempts to gain control over the classroom. Some other features are masturbating somewhere in a public place, taking part in life-threatening ventures, having unsafe sex with few partners, etc. Individuals with bipolar disorder are not able to sit still, have bothering thoughts which they fail to organize, act in an overly confident manner, and often ââ¬Å"move too fastâ⬠(Cutler & Marcus, 2010, p.481). Bipolar disorder is subdivided into the following types: bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymia, and bipolar NOS (Not Otherwise Specified) (Blazer & Steffens, 2009, p.301). To be diagnosed with bipolar I, an individual must have had one or more manic episodes. The latter is an alteration in individualââ¬â¢s mood which is euphoric, irritable or extremely expansive. It lasts for a week or longer and is accompanied by the following symptoms: reduced need for sleep, lack of energy, pressured speech, having racing thoughts, etc. Depressive episodes a re not necessarily experienced, yet rather common (Blazer & Steffens, 2009, p.301). To be diagnosed with bipolar II disorder, individuals must have had at least one depressive episode occurring with at least one episode of hypomania. The latter involves at least four days of mood that is altering which is accompanied by the symptoms mentioned in the previous paragraph (Blazer & Steffens, 2009, p.301). Cyclothymia is diagnosed in patients with cycling moods which cannot be fully referred to as mania or depression. As for bipolar NOS, these are disorders which have bipolar features and cannot be fully interpreted as specific bipolar disorders (Blazer & Steffens, 2009, p.301). Bipolar disorders are especially common in individuals whose behavior is characterized by substance abuse. Specifically, Leahy provides data that ââ¬Å"the rates of concominant alcohol and drug abuse may exceed 50% in younger menâ⬠(Leahy, 2006, p.35). The following case A clearly portrays bipolar disorder. A is a 38 y/o Caucasian female who reports long periods of depression within last 10 years. She describes having numerous episodes of feeling depressed along with 2 suicide attempts of medicine overdose. She reports losing lots of weight during those times and having considerable sleep problems, in particular having trouble falling asleep and having early wake-ups. The patient describes several periods within the last 3 years when she was able

Accord to the requirement - Assignment Example These are like, ââ¬Å"How many kids do you have?â⬠and ââ¬Å"Are you marriedââ¬â¢ A person silence in a business meeting discussion is acceptable in Japanese. This is a way of accepting the business deal. It means there is more troubling on my part as yet, though you need to take it. This way in the video the client failure to utter a word in five minutes during the business discussion meeting, implies its fine. Being silent in a conversation is not an issue in Japanese conversations. Then in the business meeting in Japanese context, one is not supposed ask personal questions like ââ¬ËDo you have kid or kidsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Are you marriedâ⬠. This is only allowable in case you are acquainted to your business partner. From the previous discussion answers, it is clear that the difference between the Japanese behavioral communication and Japanese is where silence in business meeting in America means that the person is inadequate with the discussion with the counterpart. Additionally, asking private questions in America is normal part of any business conversation. On the other hand, the Japanese donââ¬â¢t entertain this in a business conversation. This is given that the business partners are not yet familiar with each other. The composition of Japanese teams as portrayed on the video is purely of Japan origin and most are female. On the contrary, the American team is composed or I presume from watching the video, people of different cultures and so of different origin. For the Japanese team, their reflection on the culture of organization is one. On the other hand, the American team got different reflections on their culture organization of the business they are representing. The use, of the first name in America is acceptable as a way of introducing oneself in a business meeting. On the other hand, this is not the case in the Japan where one is

SAUDIZATION AND THE SAUDI ARABIAN KINGDOM DEVELOPMENT Essay
SAUDIZATION AND THE SAUDI ARABIAN KINGDOM DEVELOPMENT - Essay Example Saudization was an initiative from Saudi Government to encourage the participation and employment of Saudi Nationals in the private sector of the country. This was started during 2006 which were started in order to ensure that local Saudis get jobs in private sector. Government made the condition that if private sector companies do not hire the locals, they will fail to get the government contracts. Initially government set the level of 75% wherein 75% of the employees will be locals however, in actuality, the figures are relatively low. Human resource development (HRD), according to Harbisson and Myers (1964, cited in Abdulai, 2000), is the process of increasing the knowledge, skills and the capacities of all people in society. Therefore, when there is an increase in the level of skills possessed by individuals, an economy will invariably benefit and develop faster. In case of Saudization, this is more critical because it requires a completely new and strategic approach towards HRM in order to ensure that the locals are engaged and employed by the local firms in order to upgrade their skills and reduce the dependence of country on foreign workers. This essay will discuss as to how the process of Saudization can help to create jobs and support the national economy of Saudi Arabia, a country in the Middle East. Also, the issue and its relationship to the development of the economy will be discussed, as well as challenges that may be faced. Recommendations will therefore be made based on the research findings. Saudi Arabia and its Economy The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a centrally planned economy. Itââ¬â¢s an oil-based economy with steady government control over major economic activities. The country owns 25% of the worldââ¬â¢s confirmed petroleum reserves and ranks as the worldââ¬â¢s largest petroleum exporter (OPEC, 2009). The petroleum sector of the Saudi economy accounts for roughly 75% of budget revenues, 45% of the gross domestic product (GDP), an d 90% of export earnings. Approximately 4 million foreign workers play an important role in the oil and service sectors, contributing to the Saudi economy (Gianos & Lusignan, 2003). In the earlier years, discussions were focused on the extent to which Saudi Arabia is prepared to increase market admittance for foreign goods and services and the length of time to become fully compliant with World Trade Organization (WTO) obligations. In April 2000, therefore, the government established the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority to encourage foreign direct investment in Saudi Arabia, and as of November 2005, Saudi Arabia was formally permitted to join the WTO (Al-Asmari, 2008). The Saudi Arabian economy is flooded with family businesses which constitute the backbone of the economy. According to Davis et al. (1997) the family organisations constitute 90% of the trading activities in the Gulf region and 95% of the total organizations in the country. This percentage is relatively high because in other regions of the world, the percentage is between 65% and 80% (Davis et al., 1997). Also, according to the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) (2006), the overall number of such family organizations is estimated to have reached

In the practical application of the resource-based view of the firm Essay
In the practical application of the resource-based view of the firm (the RBV) there is usually less emphasis placed on the management of resources than on the - Essay Example Jay Barneyââ¬â¢s Resource Based View (RBV) is one such interesting tool. Because of its simplicity, engineers find it easy to understand the management perspective behind enterprises. This essay explains the concept of RBV, examples of key resources in well-known companies, managementsââ¬â¢ approach in using the tool together with opinions on its utility and limitations. All firms are built on certain resources. In common parlance, we hear of money, materials and men as the resources of any business in a very broad sense. If all firms collect these resources and start operations to produce and market the same goods or services, then there will be intense competition and few would survive. In order to survive with normal profits and grow with supra-normal profits, a firm has to distinguish itself in some ways from the others competing with it. One way of looking at such distinguishing features of a firm is the so-called ââ¬Ëresource-based viewââ¬â¢, conceived and named as such by Jay Barney in the early 1990s. Barney1 postulated that a firm has to identify the resources it has in its command, evaluate them to identify the ââ¬Ëkey resourcesââ¬â¢ which give the firm its competitive advantage and guard them jealously to maintain the strategic advantage. In order to identify whether a resource can be treated as a key resource or not, Barney developed a four point criterion of resource evaluation, VRIN, that stands for: As can be seen, the emphasis is on resources as internal to a firm. From the simplest Mom & Dad stores, requiring no more than a couple of people, a few consumer items and a place to store and sell, to the very complex commercial or industrial firms of today with properties, unique products, patents and trained staff, we have a plethora of resources. Many of them are quite visible for all to see; but many more are what are known as intangibles, which are not seen or easily understood; for instance,

Masculine and Feminine Qualities in Each Individual - Research Paper Example SpongeBob and Patrick found a clam, depicted as an infant, and nurtured it together. Well, it wouldnââ¬â¢t have created such an outrage except that SpongeBob acted as the doting, stay at home housewife while Patrick pretended to go to work to be the breadwinner for the family. The supposed couple quarrelled on their roles in rearing the baby with SpongeBob nagging away on the toll of doing every single household chore while Patrick asserts the workload he had to endure (ââ¬Å"Rock-a-Bye Bivalveâ⬠). Needless to say, this episode enraged certain groups, especially religious ones, claiming that it promotes homosexuality and advocated for the boycott of the Nickelodeon staple. The showââ¬â¢s creator, Stephen Hillenburg, was quick to answer that SpongeBob is asexual. The showââ¬â¢s creator, Stephen Hillenburg, was quick to answer that SpongeBob is asexual (The Week Staff, para.2). What exactly that meant? It leaves much to the imagination, but, simply that he is neither mal e nor female. Hillenburg may as well just have found a way to get out of the mess but the androgynous quality of his characters resonates to reflect the blurring of the lines of gender identity. When you think about it, this cartoon is able to encompass a wide audience that does not limit according to sex. It is entertaining to both girls and boys where even the age brackets are often irrelevant. Strauss found that its viewing audience includes ages between 5-49 (qt. in Tarr and Brown 21). The main character, despite his name, is Bob, is a yellow sponge who has pretty straightforward goals in life.

Reading of Jane Austen(TM)s short stories Essay Example for Free
Reading of Jane Austen(TM)s short stories Essay From a reading of Jane Austens short stories what do we learn about womens lives in the late eighteenth century? In Jane Austens a collection of short stories Love and Friendship, she shows us the lives of women in the late eighteenth century, and what they have to deal with. These short stories are written in epistolary (letter) form between women who were friends at the time, these letters show us what their lives were about and what was considered to be important to them. Jane Austen writes about marriage, status, personal views and the attitude to what she saw, she also uses humour in her letters showing us how shallow women were in that time. For young women in the late eighteenth century marriage was very important and a woman who did not get married was considered worthless, all women were expected to get married. There were many important reasons to get married for a woman living in this time, the most important reason being having money. If a woman had no money she would be considered as having a bad status, because women when they were with their parents had no possession of their own. In the three sisters Mary is not sure about marrying Mr Watts she does not like him but she still considers marring him because he has a lot of money. He has a large fortune and will make great settlements on me. I hate him more than anybody else in the world. This shows us the amount of money he has is more important than the relationship and how happy they will be together. She decides to marry him if he will give her all she wants, this shows us how shallow the women could be and what they will do for possessions, she demands a new carriage hung as high as the Duttons, and blue spotted with silver; and I shall expect a new saddle horse, a suit of fine lace, and an infinite number of the most fine jewelsmust always let me do just as I please and make a very good husband. This shows us all the things she expects to get in marring him they are all but one material goods. This shows us that women in the eighteenth century were very much focused on marriage and how much money they could get out of it. If a woman did not get married she would either have to live with her mother or a paid female companion. Another alternative was to be a governess to a wealthy family; this was not a good thing to be because you would be treated a little better than a servant, they would neither be on the same level as the servants or the family. Young women in the late eighteenth century were considered well educated if they had plenty of accomplishment, these were things like sewing, singing, reading and entertaining their guests at a dinner party. In Lesley Castle, Margaret Lesley was writing to Charlotte Lutterell tell her what they did to pass the time in Scotland and what they do is we read, we work, we walk and when fatigued with these employments we relieve our spirits, either by a lively song, a graceful dance or by some smart bon-mot and witty repartee. This shows us that they did not do any challenging or intelligent type of work. The women in the late 18th century were also polite this shows us that this mattered in this time; we can see they are polite because they write long pleasant letters to each other. Lesley Castle demonstrates that it is important to have accomplishments in this time and it allowed them to get into a good marriage which was the most important thing in a young ladys life in the late eighteenth century. Not many girls of the time attended school but the few that did attended boarding school, would not learn to be clever they would only learn things like sewing and singing. Margaret Lesley and Charlotte Lutterell both went to boarding school together, it is four years since my removal from school. School was mostly for boys, some girls went to boarding school but the education was not very good because they did not need lessons and the teachers did not know what to teach them. Women in the late eighteenth century did not own anything or have any property for themselves. A womans inheritance would be given to a distant male relative the woman would never be given the whole of the money. The only way women could get money was through marriage, Mary only wants to marry Mr Watts because he has a large fortune and will make great settlements on me. She also expects the pinmoney; two hundred a year. Which Mr Watts only want to be a hundred and seventy-five. When Mary agrees to marry Mr Watts she expects him to build her an elegant greenhouse and stock it with plants a room on purpose and a theatre to act plays in. she also expects to be allow out of the house all the time she insists on spending every Winter in Bath, every Spring in town, every summer in taking some Tour, and every Autumn at a watering place. Marys mother is set on not letting such an opportunity escape of settling one of my daughters so advantageously. This shows us that money was not only important to the woman but also important to the rest of their family, to ensure that the family would stay with money. It would also be in a mans interest to marry someone with lots of money because some of the family money would be given to him for marring into the family. Marriage was based on material goods not on a relationship. If you did not marry you would have no money and possessions you could have from your father. In Lesley castle Charlotte Lutterell is worried what will happen if by this second marriage sir George should have a second family, our fortunes must be considerably diminished those jewels which once adorned our mother Matilda would no longer sit at the head of her fathers table. This shows us how easy it is to loose money and financial security. Female friendship in the late 18th century come over as shallow, because they are always judging each other Margaret Lesley calls her mother-in-law an insignificant dwarf. Where their mother-in-law Susan Lesley calls Margaret and Matilda scotch giants and continues I am sure they would frighten you out of your wits. This show us that women in the 18th century judge each other and think they look better than each other. There is also a lot of rivalry between friends Mary in The Three Sisters, says how I will triumph over the Duttons and the two families were friends; this shows us that was even rivalry between friends and even though they were nice to them to their faces they were horrible behind peoples backs. Manners and etiquette were more important than actual friendship; Susan Lesley and Charlotte Lutterell are only friends even though they are feed up with each other because she is too polite and I am too civil to say they still write letters which are still as frequent and as affectionate. This show us that women in the late eighteenth century are very selfish, and their lives were very shallow. We have learnt from reading Jane Austens short stories that women in the late eighteenth century had very little choice to what they could do because they had to marry to ensure that they would still have enough money to live. Life in the late eighteenth century for women was very much everyone out for themselves and they all had to fight over having a rich man and material goods better than everyone elses. Jane Austen did not like living in this time we can tell this because of the humour she uses with the women to show how important money was to them in The Three Sister Mary is very indecisive whether she should marry Mr Watts or not. Today we find it hard to compare with how they lived in the late eighteenth century because it is so different to how we live now. I am glad that we live in a society today which is more accepting to women and how both male and female should be treated the same. I also believe that Jane Austen would prefer to live in the society that we live in today because Jane Austen always humours the women in her collection of short stories.

Comparison of American and French Revolutions
Comparison of American and French Revolutions Revolution have different definition, according to the way it been understood by people/society, some people/society see the idea of revolution as less important and unnecessary, while some people/society feel there is need for revolution because revolution bring change for good and progress in a particular society, the French and American revolution is a good example of the advantage of revolution. So let me give a brief definition and explanation of revolution. REVOLUTION Revolution can be defined as the modification of a government from one change to another, because of it tyrannical and corrupt nature. Revolution can also be seen as a change in the way a country is been rule/governed, it usually to a political unit, and lead to violence or war, people forceful overthrow a government that are oppressing, taking advantage of the people, misusing their position as government and take away their freedom and rights as citizens. THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION The American continent was discovered towards the end of 15th century, in the American revolution was a political upheaval that took place between 1775-1783,the American colonies rejected monarchy and aristocracy in a revolutionary move, overthrew the authority of Britain and founded the united states of American, the American were been rule by the Britain for a very long time and were not happy with the way there been treated and needed a change so that lead to their raise for freedom and declaration of independence The American where against the colonial administration because their felt their deserve the right of the Englishmen. When the American Revolution began in 1775 the American colonists were not yet fighting for independence from Britain.instead, they were attempting to preserve their rights as british citizens which had been violated by taxation and military oppression. The complex causes of the revolution ultimately led to the colonists issuing a declaration of independence and fighting a war for freedom from British rule. After winning the French and Indian war, King George II decided that it was time to tighten Britainââ¬â¢s control over the colonies there were several reasons from this, one was because the Indians still posed a threat to the british government and second, the French indian war which lasted seven years had cost Britain a lot of money. The king wanted the colonies to help pay for all those expenses. The first of several laws to accomplish this was the proclamation of 1763 which forbade the colonists to move westward part the Appalachian mountain.in 1764, Britain passed a law that prevented the colonies to print and use their own money. These and several other laws passed to tighten the English reign on the colonies brought out a lot of anger and frustration. But the one law that really angered the colonists was the: STAMP ACTS OF March 22, 1765 Which taxed all kinds of printed paper /documents from wills licences, newspapers, diplomas, even playing cards. There have to pay for any printing, the colonists could not take any more so they started speaking not against the new taxes.in October of 1765, nine of colonies sent their representatives to new york city to discuss what they thought of the stamp act, they decided that the stamp act and all the other taxation laws were illegal since the colonies were not represented in the british parliament. The Declaratory Acts (March 18, 1766) Insisted that parliament retained full power to make laws for the colonies ââ¬Å"in all cases whatever Establish that Britain had the right to tax the coloniesâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ the said colonies and planations in America have been, are and of right ought to be subordinate unto and dependent upon the imperial crown and parliament of great britainsâ⬠The Townshend Acts (1787) The parliament passed a new series of taxes called the Townshend acts.american colonists now had to pay taxes on a number of popular british goods that they imported from English, these included items such as tea, paints, glass, ink and dyes so that there can able to pay the salaries of the judges and governors. Though these taxes were actually quite small, the outcry from many American leaders were huge. The taxes were imposed to help make the colonial officials independent of the colonist and induded duties on glass, paper and tea. Smugglers increased their activities to avoid the tax leading to more troops in boston. The Tea Acts (1773) It was a act of the parliament of great britain.its principa overt objective was reduce the massive surplus of tea held by financially troubled British east India company in its London warehouses and help the struggling company survive. A related objective was to undercut the price of illegal tea, smuggled into Britainââ¬â¢s worth American colonies. This was supposed to convince the colonists to purchase company tea to North America and the right to the duty-free export of tea from Britain, although the tax imposed by the Townshend acts and collected in the colonies remained in force, it received the royal assent on may 10, 1773 Colonists in the thirtheen colonies recognised the implications of the actââ¬â¢s provisions, and coalition of merchants, smugglers and artisans similar to that which had opposed the stamp act 1765 mobilized opposition to delivery and distribution of the tea. The companyââ¬â¢s authorised consignees were harassed, and in many colonies successful efforts were made to prevent the tea from being landed.in boston, this resistance culminated in the boston tea party on December 16, 1773, when colonists (some disguised as native americans) boarded tea ships anchored in the harbour and dumped their tea cargo overboard.parliamentary reaction to this event included passage of the coercive acts, Coercive acts: designed to punish Massachusetts for its resistance, and the appointment of general Thomas gage as royal governor of Massachusetts.these actions further raised tensions that broke out into the American war of independence in april 1775. The intolerable acts In response to the bosten tea party, the king imposed the intolerable acts The major causes of the American revolution, the intolerable acts were the boston party act, closing the port of boston until the dutch east India company been repaid for the destroyed tea The Massachusetts government act, allowing royal officials to be tried in Britain if the king felt it necessary for fair justice; The quartering act, ordering the colonies to provide lodging for british soldiers The Quà ©bec act, expanding british territory in Canada and guaranteeing the free practice of roman Catholicism The declaration of independence The declaration opens with a preamble describing the documentââ¬â¢s necessity in explaining why the colonies have overthrown their place as a separate nation in the world. All men are created equal and there are certain unalienable rights that governments should never violate.these rights include the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.when a government fails to protect those rights, it is not only the right, but also the duty of the people to ovefrthrow that government.in its place, the people should establish a government that is designed to protect those rights.governenrs are rarely overthrown, and should not be overthrown for trival reasons.in this case,a long history of abuses had led the colonists to overthrow a tyrannical government. The king of great Britain,george111,is guilty of 27 specific abuses.the king interfered with the colonists right to self-government and for a fair judicial system.acting with parliament, the king also instituted legislation that affected the colonies without their consent.this legislation levied taxes on the colonists.it also required hem to quarter british soldiers, removed their right to trail by jury, and prevented them from trading freely, additionally, the king and parliament are guilty of outright destruction of American life and property by their refusal to protect the colonies borders, their confiscation of American ships at sea,and their intent to hire foreign mercenaries to fight against the colonists. The colonial governments tried to reach a peaceful reconciliation of these differences with great Britain, but were continually ignored.colonists who appealed to british citizens were similarly ignored, despite their shared common heritage and their just cause.after many peaceful attempts, the colonists have no choice but to declare independence from great Britain The new nation will be called the united states of America and will have no further connections with great Britain.the new government will reserve the right to levy war, make peace, make alliances with foreign nations ,conduct trade and do anything else that nations do. THE FRENCH REVOLUTION The French revolution was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France from 1789 to 1799 that profoundly affected French, marking the decline of powerful monarchies and the rise of democracy and nationalism. Popular resentment of the privileges enjoyed by the clergy and aristocracy grew during a financial crisis following two expensive wars and years of bad harvests.demands for change were formulated in terms of enlightenment ideals and caused the covocation of the estates-general in may 1789.the first year of the revolution saw members of the third estate taking control, the assault in july, the passage of declaration of the rights of man and citizen in august, and a womenââ¬â¢s march on versailes that forced the royal court back to paris in October.a central event of the first stage was the abolition of feudalism and the old rules, taxes, courts and privileges left over from the age of feudalism on 4 August 1789.yhe next stage was dominated by struggles between various liberal assemblies and right-wing supporters of the monarchy intent on thwarting major reforms.a republic was proclaimed in September 1792 in a momentous event that led to international condemnation. The king Louis xiv was executed on 21 january 1793. External threats closely shaped the course of the revolution. The revolutionary wars beginning in 1792 ultimately featured French victories that facilitated the conquest of the Italian peninsula, the low countries and most territories west of rhine ââ¬âachievements that had eluded previous French governments for centuries.internally, popular agitation radicalized therevolution significantly, culminating in the rise of maximilien Robespierre and the jacobins.the dictatorship imposed by the committee of public safety during the reign of terror, from 1793 until 1794,caused up to 40,000 deaths inside france abolished slavery in the colonies and secured the borders of the new republic from its enemies.the reign of terror ended with the overthrow and executive of Robespierre and the other leading jacobins in the thermidorian reaction,an executive council known as the directory then assumed control of the French state in 1795 and held power until 1799.dogged by charges of corruption, the di rectory collapsed in a coup led by napoleon Bonaparte in 1799,widely seen as the final year of the revolution, napoleon went on to establish the consulate and later the first empire, setting the stage for a wider array of global conflicts in the Napoleonic wars. The modern era has unfolded in the shadow of the French revolution.french society itself underwent a transformation as feudal, aristocratic and religious privileges disappeared and old ideas about tradition and hierarchy were abruptly overthrown under the mantra of literate,egalite,fraternite.globally.the revolution accelerated the rise of republics and democracies, the liberalism, nationalism, socialism and secularism, the development of modern political ideologies and the practice of total war some of its central document. CAUSES OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION (1) International: struggle for hegemony and empire outstrips the fiscal resources of the state (2) political conflict: conflict between the monarchy and the nobility over throwâ⬠reformsâ⬠of the tax system led to paralysis and bankruptcy. (3) Social antagonisms between two groups the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie (4) Ineffective ruler: Louis xvi, he was a poor leadership that was not performing his function as a king. (5) economic hardship, especially the agrarian crisis of 1788-89 generates generates popular discontent and disorders caused by food shortages. Financial crisis was the major and main problem why the French people raise for a change that lead to revolution. The people were having problem of poor harvest and so many people were going hungry and the king was not even showing any concern, the king was just spending carelessly, while the people of France was starving and surviving. The similarities between the French and American revolution. Both were by a clique of wealthy bourgeois anxious to pay less tax. Both used propaganda to enlist the common people as foot soldiers of the revolt: in one case the rights of man; in the other, the parallel pious platitudes in the declaration of independence Both were equally hypocritical Both were been oppressed and treated badly Both were not impress with their government/rule and wanted a change. The American and French revolution made a lot of impact in the life of people all over the world, it makes us understand that we just donââ¬â¢t sit down and watch when our government are not doing what there supposed to do. Everybody want a change for good.
Analysis Of Anne Franks Diary
Analysis Of Anne Franks Diary Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl takes place between June 12, 1942 and August 1, 1944 in Amsterdam, Holland. Specifically, it takes place in their Secret Annex which is hidden behind a bookcase in Mr. Van Daan and Mr. Franks office. The place is cramped with many people, and they must be very quiet so they do not blow their cover. There are workers working in the building where they are so any noise they make is a risk. Characters Anne Frank is the narrator of the book. She is a young, teenage girl of the Jewish faith. The story takes place during the holocaust, so Anne and her family are hiding in a Secret Annex. Anne was a very popular girl in school with both boys and girls. Wanting to be a writer when she grows up, Anne loves to read and write. Margot Frank is Annes sister and three years older. She is quieter and more serious than Anne. Margot gets along better with their parents and becomes closer with Anne throughout the book. Otto Frank is Anne and Margots dad. He is the one who arranges their hiding spot in the Secret Annex. Mr. Frank is modest and quiet with a very close relationship with Anne. He teaches her most of her subjects including Algebra and English. Edith Frank, Anne and Margots mother, has a horrible relationship with Anne. She does not fit the image of what a mother should be according to Anne. It seems as though she always takes Margots side which really ticks Anne off. Peter Van Daan is the son of another family hiding with the Franks. He appears to be boring at first to Anne, but soon enough they fall in love. Peter is a bit older than Anne, but that doesnt stop them from having a relationship. He starts to cling to her and Anne finds out he does not like religion. Both of these are reasons why Anne eventually dumps him. He does not even make the smallest attempt to change his ways which disgusts Anne. Petronella Van Daan is Peters mom. She does not get along with Anne at all. In fact, she criticizes Anne constantly and flirts with Mr. Frank which really gets Anne mad. However, Anne finds her easier to talk to than her own mother. Hans Van Daan is Peters dad and Mrs. Van Daans wife. He often criticizes Anne like most of the adults. Albert Dussel shares a room with Anne and is the last one to arrive in the Secret Annex. He was a dentist before he went into hiding. Anne likes him at first, but soon she discovers his true personality and has an opposite opinion of him. Occasionally, she would do things to annoy him on purpose. A secondary character in the book is Peter Wessel, a young man who Anne crushes on. Anne often dreams of Peter and once dreamt of him touching her cheek. She hopes that they can be together when it is safe to come out of hiding. Plot Anne Frank is a normal teenage girl living a perfectly normal life until she finds out that the dictator of Germany, Adolph Hitler, is executing all Jews for no good reason. Her and her family are forced to go into hiding so the Nazis dont take them away to concentration camps. They hide in an attic behind a bookcase in Mr. Franks office. They call it the Secret Annex. The three members of the Van Daan family (Petronella, Hans, and Peter) and Mr. Dussel, a former dentist, also hide with the Franks for their own safety. The rising action is when the family is sitting around the radio listening to the news about the ongoing war. They hear that things are getting better and the war is on the verge of ending. However, unknown to the Franks, Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel, things really arent getting better. The climax of the story is when Hitler was informed that there are Jews hiding in an annex. Hitler sends Nazis to go and find them. The eight of them are discovered and they are no longer safe. The falling action is when the characters were taken off to concentration camp. They knew they were probably going to die, but tried to look on the bright side. They all were separated except for Margot and Anne who stayed together. The resolution is when Miep finds Annes diary left in the annex. She was looking around in the room after they had been taken away. Miep saw a plaid cloth and went to pick it up. The diary, she soon learned, was under the cloth and an inspirational diary at that. Theme(s) I believe the main theme is isolation in two different ways. The first is physical because the Franks, Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel are physically cut-off from the rest of the world. It is just the eight of them cramped inside a small annex. They cannot go outside, they can barely even make noise, and they lived on the same foods for a while. They are isolated from the outside world. The isolation theme of this book is also mental because Anne feels isolated from her family and friends hiding in the secret annex. Even while all eight of them are in the same room, Anne feels cut-off from most of the people there, especially her mother. Inside Anne, she is as far away from her mother as she can be, even if theyre sharing a chair. Anne feels the same way about Mrs. Van Daan and others hiding with her: isolated. Conflicts The conflict of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl involves the Germans and the Jews. The story takes place in the middle of World War II and the Holocaust. The Germans, or Nazis, are executing all Jews under Adolph Hitlers command. Jews were sent to concentration camps, which is the same as saying death row. A lot of Jews were sent into hiding, but most were discovered by the German army. The Franks, Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel are hiding from the Nazis in this book. Those hiding in the Secret Annex were avoiding concentration camp, extreme torture, and death. They did not have a choice to hide unless they wanted to die, and would not have a choice to go to the camp if they were found. The Franks, Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel must keep their cover, stay quiet, and wait in hiding until the war is over and it is safe for a Jew to walk the streets in Holland. Important Passages Anne says, I keep my ideals, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I think this is a very inspirational quote. Anne is facing death at an unknown time, yet she is still very positive. This should instigate use to stay positive. The next time we are faced with a difficult situation and are down with pessimism, we can think of Anne Frank. This innocent girls problem was probably ten times as worse as what we are facing; nevertheless she still looks on the bright side as should we when facing an obstacle. Anne also say, Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a persons character lies in their own hands. I think this is a good passage from the book because it explains that you should be your own person and you are in the drivers seat of your life. You can be whatever you want to be no matter what others tell you. I think this is good advice for a lot of kids. Even though others can guide you through life, ultimately you make your own decisions about your life. You control your life, use it wisely, do what you love, and have fun doing it! Vocabulary Florin: a cupronickel coin of Great Britain, formerly equal to two shillings or the tenth part of a pound and retained in circulation equal to 10 new pence after decimalization in 1971 Palpitation: an unusually or abnormally rapid or violent beating of the heart Gibe: to utter mocking or scoffing words Opklap: Dutch type of bed, which folds against the wall to look like a bookcase with curtains before it Wangle: to bring about, accomplish, or obtain by scheming or underhand methods Faze: to cause to be disturbed or disconcerted Calligraphy: highly decorative handwriting Finicky: excessively particular or fastidious Saboteur: a person who commits or practices sabotage Paragon: a model or pattern of excellence or of a particular excellence Universal Connection Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl is about an entire race of Jews being executed just because they are Jewish. Racism in the world today is comparable to the Holocaust because they were both discrimination against a race for no good reason. Now in most cases racism today is not as extreme, but it is still racial discrimination. It was wrong back then and it is wrong now. This is a connection between the book and the world today. I can make a personal connection to this book because I sometimes feel as if adults are out to get me when they criticize me. All kids hate being criticized by adults and find at least one adult annoying, including me. Anne had bad relationships with the adults there and I know how she feels because Ive been there before. Sometimes, you just want to talk back to a teacher or scream at a coach, but what makes it worse is you know you cant. Anne felt this way in the book and Ive felt this way before in life. This is how I connect to this book personally. Reflective Questioning I would ask Anne Frank so many questions if I had the chance when she was alive. I would ask things like what was it like hiding for years, did you ever think you would be found, and what went through your mind when you were found. However, I think the first questions I would ask are, Did you ever think your diary would be published and have millions of copies sold? If you knew you did, would you have added anything or taken anything out before its publishing? I would ask that because a lot of what she wrote was personal and I would hate to share all of my personal feelings and thoughts with millions of strangers all around the world. I would like to know if she felt the same. I would rate this book a five of ten. It wasnt one of the worst books I have ever read, but it was clearly not one of the best. I do not like stories that date that far back; I like books that are more modern. Also, I found it boring that it was the same thing every day: they ate the same foods, she writes her adoration for Peter, she complains about the adults, and she writes that she will one day be free. Another reason I did not like it is that it was too slow and took too long to read. I understand it is a classic, and the fact it is a true story is unbelievable. However, it is just not my kind of book. I prefer a book easier to relate to, or a book about a subject I am interested in.

The Complex Issue of Gun Control Essay -- gun laws, illegal firearms
Taking into account of the recent shooting sprees, the gun control debate has started again. However, people have contemplated: ââ¬Å"Why does America need gun lawsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Why are so many states disagreeing about the restrictions that need to be put in place for civilians looking to purchase firearms.â⬠The reasoning for such contemplation is that the fluxuating strictness of gun laws have led to several incidences within states that have strict gun laws due to the fact that the perpetrators of these incidences have purchased their firearms either from black markets, or states where the severity of gun control is at minimal levels. One of the most important aspects of the debate centered on gun legislature is the distribution of illegal firearms to felons, criminals and American youth. Witemuteââ¬â¢s article hints that there have been several illegal gun sales from unauthorized markets and to those under the legal ages of 18 or 21 depending on the type of firearm being sold. Unfortunately, these illegal sales have resulted in an increase in gun related injuries and deaths. (55) Another aspect of this debate is in fact, the lobbyists that are pushing for more lenient or tighter gun-laws. It seems that the lobbyists that wanted stricter firearm-related laws are the ones who have witnessed the damage that criminals and the mentally unstable can really do with a gun in their hand. Those pushing for leniency when it comes to gun legislature state that firearms are trying to protect their right to carry an essential tool for those who want to venture the countryside in search for animals to shoot down for food, clothing or sport. The last aspects of the controversy are the federal and state laws that have decided whether or not concealed wea... ...ina in the other hand has prohibited the possession of any firearm to civilians other than sportsmen, hunters and security personnel. Even though rifles and shotguns are permitted, they require a time consuming licensing procedure in order to even possess one and the only citizens that can procure them are sportsmen who need these firearms to hunt and shoot skeet disks. To View or Not To View :: Media News Television Essays
To View or Not To View Staying in touch with the outside world, via the 10:00 evening news, has become increasingly difficult for me the last couple years. Not only am I usually not awake at 10:00, but if I am, I do not want to spend my time hearing about the many murders, rapes, and robberies that plaque our city. Television news has not only taken on a tabloid-like feel, but the substance of most of the news stories is a total waste of my viewing time. However, in an effort to stay connected, I currently listen to the morning TV news as well as read the Chicago Tribune on a daily basis. The local news broadcast I taped to critique for this paper was the 5:00 News on Channel 5 which was shown on Monday, April 7, co-anchored by Joan Esposito, a 30ish white female, and Warren Saunders, a late 50's black male. I viewed a total of 13 stories which were comprised mainly of murder, weather and informational topics. The "Top Story" was about a 7 year old girl who was murdered by a gang member while she was waiting in line to get ice cream. The story's time went for approximately 4 minutes and included 3 interviews of people, 3 different on-screen captions and a camera span of teddy bears on a fence. The actual meaty parts of this story, that is, the facts, were fully given in this broadcast. However, interviews with crying persons of the gang members' families, and the little girl's school superintendent musing out loud on what this little girl could have become, was a total waste of time. Conversely, scanning the teddy bears was touching, but lent nothing to the telling of the tragic event that took this girl's life. I suppose the "powers that be" at the news station do not feel the public can feel on their own, thus we are constantly being given visual reminders of how sad a story is. I can safely say that the Top Story of the majority of broadcasts that I view are murders. Based on that premise, the senseless murder of this child was an important story in Chicago that day. I do take exception, however, to the many visuals used to evoke emotion as the sadness of the story spoke for itself. Apart from this story, the only remaining "news stories" consisted of a murder of a cab driver and two stories of missing persons.

Psychoanalytic and Trait Approaches to Personality Essay
The study of reputation had been bingle of the more or less intriguing subjects of psychology. reputation refers to a labyrinthine set of characteristics unique to the case-by-case which form basis on how he/she feels, thinks, and be inducts (Engler, 2003). Personality theories argon varied and separately integrity tries to explain the development of constitution and its manifestations. The study of some championalizedity had in like manner conduct to a number of assessment tools that guide to quantify and calculate spirit. Moreover, the stability of atomic number 53s record had also been institute to be associated with the mental health of a someone, as well as the whole step of his/her relationship with other(a)wises. Recently, record had also been cogitate to biological health and certain types of illnesses. This newspaper discusses the psychoanalyticalalal and mark arisees to the study of genius. The psychoanalytic approach to the study of reput ation was essential by Sigmund Freud in the early comment of the development of psychology as a scientific discipline. The psychoanalytic approach says that disposition is shaped by the unconscious mind mind mind forces in ones mental tell (Larsen & Buss, 2005). Individuals are often unaware of the unconscious mental forces and how it merchantman influence jadeing, thoughts, and emotions. Personality is composed of three structures, the id, ego, and superego. The id refers to the drives and instincts, the superego refers to the conscience or moral agency, and the ego is the mediator surrounded by the id and superego and is the social agency. The three agencies squeeze out be in conflict and produces trouble, the reputation develops excuse machines to cope with the anxieties. The trait approach to constitution says that individualality is relatively up to now from puerility to bounteoushood and that a person move be portrayed through his/her temper traits of whi ch quite a number has been determine by trait theorists. characters refer to the personal characteristics of the man-to-man that calls his/her patterns of behavior, thoughts, and feelings.Modern trait possibleness endorses the Big 5 temper traits (OCEAN) which includes propagateness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism (Larsen & Buss, 2005). These personality traits had been found to exist in unlike cultures and can adequately report a persons personality. The deviation between psychoanalytic to the trait approach is how the psychoanalytic hypothesis explains the development of personality as rooted in the unconscious mental states and electric s fork outrhood experiences of the individual.Trait speculation suggests that the framework of ones personality is already present at take and continues to develop over the course of ones keep. However, the basic personality traits provide remain and influence the development of other traits (Funde r, 2007). The psychoanalytic speculation had it right when it verbalise that previous experiences influences ones personality and defense reaction mechanisms are used to quietus anxieties brought about by unconscious drives and impulses. We agnize that ones experiences strongly bear upon ones personality, for example, a baby bird deprived of parental love may become untrusting, cynical and meet abject relationships in adulthood. Defense mechanisms are patterns of behavior that are used as responses to anxieties to proceed normal functioning. The trait theory on the other playscript was correct when it state that traits can be used to describe the person and that personality traits are stable over time. Personality traits are descriptions of behavioral, cognitive, and affectional patterns that people have in change degrees. For example, people who are extroverteded are funny, sociable, friendly, and approachable it would be very troublesome to find a person who is an extrovert and yet be reserved and shy. Moreover, personality traits are fairly stable, a child who is shy may overcome his/her coldness but on accession will exhibit some form of shyness. The psychoanalytic theory emphasizes the unconscious mental states of the individual as precursors of personality, however, if a person is non aware of this mental state, then how could that person be influenced by such forces. Moreover, psychoanalytic theory made mention that childishness experiences determines the personality of the individual, Freud however did non count on for the fact that individuals with happy childhoods can also develop personality problems in adulthood. Trait theory on the other hand claim that the Big 5 personality traits are found across cultures, however, since trait theorists have already identified thousands of traits, is it non easier for them to categorize such traits into five popular traits. In addition, trait theory says that traits can adequately describe a person, however, how can traits fully portray the complex person by single trait. Trait theory attempts to provide a simplistic account to a very complex design such as personality. Freuds defense mechanisms are thought patterns that attempt to fan out the anxiety that is brought about by conflicts in ones personality. Denial is one of the most used defense mechanism denial means to refuse the faithfulness or the reality of an event or situation. For example, when one is diagnosed to be terminally ill, the premier response is denial. The truth that one is destruction is too painful for the individual to bear and causes anxiety, in order to deal with the anxiety, the individual may deny the diagnosis and conceptualise that the doctor have made a mistake. Projection occurs when the individual attributes his/her own unacceptable impulses to a nonher person. For example, a man who is unconnected with his sexuality may begin to shun gay men, hating gays would tell the person t hat he is not gay and therefore eases the anxiety of his confused feelings. Repression is used to control traumatic experiences or events that are full of anxiety.A child who had been abused by an adult may repress the memories and push it into the unconscious so that it would not be remembered. The psychoanalytic theory was developed in twee England where anything pertaining to ones sexuality was considered as a taboo and inappropriate (Engler, 2003). Freud was a neurologist and begun his work treating individuals with mental disorders which he called dementia. In his treatment, he discovered that most people who exhibited bizarre disorders had repressed memories and unconscious thoughts which were sexually laden.Freud deduced that the cause of the anxiety and illnesses of his patients where unconscious desires and traumatic childhood experiences which have prevented patients from mental synthesis relationships, coping with lifespans demands and adjustments to life events. Conse quently, Freud developed a theory of personality that would integrate the knowledge he gained from his patients and the treatments that he used. Freuds theoretical concepts were labeled with distinction as it included sexism which society did not approve of (Engler, 2003).Out of the Big 5 personality traits, the trait that best describes my personality is openness, I am adventurous and curious, and I always welcome the opportunity to pick up something new. Thus, I am always open to new situations and experiences. I have a wider perspective than most people do do, I usually do not have opinions about things that I have not experienced, but I am open to the fact that I may or may not eff a new experience. I take that being open to new experiences enriches my personality I am the kind of person who always signs up for new events, the root in the bungee jumping line, and the introductory to eat raw fish eggs. The personality trait that least describes me is neuroticism. As a person , I am aware of who I am and what I want from life, I have values and principles in life that I subscribe to in some(prenominal) I do, thus I am not prone to insecurities and I am emotionally stable. I rarely have emotional outbursts and uncontrollable anger towards other people. I am in achieve with my own feelings and I can show up my emotions constructively. Since modern personality trait theory is the most widely applied theory of personality, I must say that it is more able to describe personality than the psychoanalytic theory.Trait theory had been the basis of many personality tests and inventories which all measure and split thoughts, feelings, and behavior under different personality traits. In conclusion, personality is a complex psychological construct that attempts to provide an explanation of why people have different traits, characteristics, behaviors, and coping strategies. Personality can be studied as an aspect of the sum of a person or it may also be used to describe the personhood of the individual. In any case, there is still more to learn about personality for at present we still have an incomplete picture of personality.
